Today’s installment of Ask Missy is all about wedding songs. This couple is having a hard time creating a wedding day soundtrack that they will love even more as each anniversary passes. Read on for my advice on choosing modern wedding songs.
Our wedding day is quickly approaching and my dj needs a list of the songs we want him to play during the event. We love all type of music from classic rock to hip hop to pop/ top 40 tunes, but need help choosing music for our first dance, father/ mother dances, cake cutting, acceptable dinner time music and some fun tunes to keep the party going into the night. My husband hasn’t really been involved with the planning process but is taking a huge interest in song selection. Should I give up control and have this be something he decides? And do you have any advice on modern wedding songs?
Sincerely, In Perfect Harmony
Choosing the song list for your wedding day can seem daunting to some brides, just because there are so many choices out there, but it can be the perfect job for the groom to take on. It is almost like the modern version of a love mix tape made just for you. When I first became friends with my boyfriend he began making me mix cds of songs he thought I might like. I realized we were moving into more than friends territory when I got a mix of unique love songs, so it always reminds me of that sweet gesture when the groom chooses the songs for his bride on her wedding day. So, Yes! Let your sweeting choose the songs on the big day (just as long as he isn’t insisting on death goth) and it will be great to bust out the playlist each year and relive those moments.
Here are my favorite songs for a Modern Wedding Day Soundtrack
Wedding Party Entrance: Treasure by Bruno Mars
First Dance: Video Games by Lana Del Rey and Mirrors by Justin Timberlake are contemporary takes on the smooth slow dance
Father/ Daughter Dance: Stubborn Love or Ho Hey both by The Lumineers for a swing around the dance floor with your daddy
Mother/ Son Dance: Lost Where I Belong by Andreya Triana
Cake Cutting: You and I by Ingrid Michaelson or Home by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros for a fun song to sip some bubbly and eat some cake to
Bouquet Toss: Run The World (Girls) or Diva by Beyonce for a fun jam to get the ladies on their feet from the Queen B herself
Garter Toss: I Need Your Love (Feat. Ellie Goulding) by Calvin Harris or Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke
Last Song: Tonight Tonight by The Smashing Pumpkins or Dog Days are Over by Florence + The Machine
